  3. Hey, Sergey !

Well, my name's Nishan and I am from Malaysia . I am a concept artist, currently working in the local game industry ( athough I am still a beginner ) and you are one of the many artists that inspire me to get better at what I do everyday. I think the first painting of yours that pulled me in was the ' Mermaid ' painting. I hope to continue seeing you grow as an artist. Thanks !

  5. Ahoi Mr. Kolesov. I came to follow your blog just recently when I stumbled upon one of your pieces on CGhub. Since then big fan. I'm a graphic artist/designer working in Cologne, Germany. Not so much concept art or painting stuff in my portfolio right now since I try to shift from design work to illustration/concept work. But some stuff u can find on my blog or at http://stonejackit.cghub.com/ Enjoying your work. Very inspiring stuff with a good amount of humor. Keep up the good work!

    1. Hey. Thank you. I looked through your works and it seems like the transition from design to illustration is going successfully! In my taste you got too much pure black and pure white colors in your light/shadow work. It is not a black color makes shadow to be a shadow, and the same for the white color and light. :) Otherwise you are doing good! Good luck with that.

  9. Hi Sergey, I'm an artist at Bethesda Game Studios. I love your artwork. If you're looking for discussion, I'd love to hear what you think about when you are planning a painting - what do you focus on before you start? How do you refine the idea of the painting?

    2. Hi Lukas, seems like we are kind of from one family since Im working in Arkane Studios :) Glad to have your question here.
Well, usually it takes really some time to get sort of clear vision of a painting before start. I'd say I'm always thinking on what might touch the feelings of audience. Yes, when I'm looking for a topic, I like to have some slice of current people's mind state at the moment (following the news, watching movies, following social networks etc.). I think it is important to face the viewers - they are my primary aim) Then, when I got the blurry/raw idea i turn it to myself, like pushing itthrough my vision and experience. Thinking like an author, I can add or change something in order to make my point of view on that. Then if it comes clear, I start to work. So, to summarize, imagine we got train crash somewhere, people died, and I'm like a journalist should go there and make a review for the people. But personally I really cannot stand the awfulness of tragedy and suffering, so I have a problem here, I still should bring the idea of tragedy to the audience, but should do it through my own perception.

Hope it is clear somehow :) Anyway you are welcome to ask further. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
    Replies

I´ve added this blog into my RSS quite recently, anyway I really like the way you are expressing your ideas.
I´m trying to improve my painting skills so I´m looking for some inspiration all the time.
I have also a blog (still without any comment) so I understand (maybe) how you feel and how much important is to know that somewhere out is some related (?) soul...

  13. I actually just discovered your blog within the last week. In case you're interested in the trail, I went from browsing thru everything on INPRNT to finding your profile there, then liked what I saw and followed the link to your blog. As I went far enough back in your blog history I realized I'd seen your art before somewhere and liked it, but I dont know where I encountered it. The most memorable piece was a man shooting a blowdart with very puffed-up cheeks, I recognized it instantly. :P

Back to your question, I like everything I've seen. Though now that I know you're interested in answering questions, I'll be sure to ask a few. :)

I don't do digital art for a living, but I'm teaching myself the ropes in my spare time (something I wish I had more of). My dream is to do concept art one day, but that's more like a "pipe dream". I find myself looking at your art at least once a day and getting lost in your paintings - they're amazing. Everything about them, the colors, the brushstrokes, the anatomy. Thanks for sharing all of your work, it's really inspiring and I learn a lot from them. I can't wait for more.

Your art is an inspiration, I have no idea what kind of path someone has to take to get the skills that you developed. Once I asked you about how you learned and you mentioned something around 9 ears of study, if I remember correctly. Huge inspiration.

I'm from Brazil, and want to be a good artist and sometimes don't don't the path... and what I should study... to able to do illustrations from my imagination. I have a lot of story about myself, but probably is too much to tell here.... hehe

If you wanna see my stuff you can find it on DA http://lucasparolin.deviantart.com/ or cghub http://lucas-ps.cghub.com/

I'm a french aspiring concept artist too, and like so many others I've been inspired by your work for a few years now I think ! The first work that really struck me was that space station illustration you did ! I'm kind of ashamed I didn't know you worked for Arkane though... My stalking skills have worn off over the years I guess ahah...
This is a weird coincidence because I'm looking for an internship right now, and I actually applied at Arkane Studio earlier today ! Knowing that you work here just make me wish they'd take me EVEN MORE !!

I love all your work, in every aspect of it. Light, color, composition, originality.. your work is magical, fresh and different. I love how clean is your mind, and how you try so much different things in every new piece. Amazing!

A couple of abstract and general questions, if you don't mind (don't complain, you posted first!):

    1. Which areas of the painting do you feel you need (or would like) to improve?

    2. Are you very analitical, or you just follow the feelings you have while painting? I'd say the latter, but in some videos (Drone Moth, for example), there are moments where you go quite slow, like planning every stroke..

    3. Do you do some kind of exercise to empty your mind before start painting? because man, I have my brain so polluted with so many references, visual information and shit..

    4. Is your ctrl+z broken?

Anyway, thanks for reading, and for showing your delicatessen to the world!

  101. Thank you for putting this blog together, I really like spending time looking at the paintings and watching the videos. The work is beautiful and your images seem to command me to imagine a story as soon as i look at them. they are digital maybe in the concept design realm, but they have a traditional painted aesthetic. Really good job man. Thank you again. Mauro

  115. Writer/musician. Looking through your backlog, mostly for inspiring desktop backgrounds. I really enjoy the vivid, flat planes of color and outlandish subject matter of a lot of your work. It's often very sharp, yet the images are vague enough to make me feel that there's a lot happening behind and beyond them.

  116. Florian Häckh, Illustrator myself and huge fan. Don't know if this is still maintained, the last post is 2 years old. Questions: how does one get good at being so loose and sketchy?
